Annual Program Spreads Holiday Cheer to Local Children and Families in Need

With the holiday season upon us, Astor Services for Children & Families, a nonprofit organization providing behavioral health and educational services to thousands of children and their families throughout the Hudson Valley and the Bronx, is seeking monetary donations and gift cards to select retailers for its annual Adopt-A-Family program this holiday season.

For more than 15 years, the Adopt-A-Family program has paired children 18 and under enrolled in Astor programs and their families with donors who purchase gifts for them during the holiday season. In the wake of the pandemic, safety procedures and modifications were made to the program. With the impact COVID-19 has had on the vulnerable families Astor serves, cancelling the program was not an option. This year, instead of wrapped gifts, gift cards will be sent directly to the families of the 2,350 children registered for the program, (an increase of 100% over last year), so they can purchase gifts for the holidays.

“The holiday season is a time of joy and goodwill towards others,” said Sonia Barnes-Moorhead, executive vice president of The Children’s Foundation of Astor. “For many years, the community has rallied together to support the Adopt-A-Family program, and thanks to their generosity, we have made the holidays brighter for thousands of children and families in need.”

Astor is currently at 43% of its fundraising goal and hopes that, with the community’s generosity, it will be able to provide some holiday joy to its neediest families.
