Smart Move: Greystone Programs Opens First Automated Residence

8/20/19

Non-profit’s newest home incorporates cutting-edge technology to empower residents

In an exciting move to expand its services, Greystone Programs, a non-profit organization serving children, adults and families living with autism and other developmental disabilities in the Hudson Valley, recently announced the opening of its first ever smart residence, located in Amenia, New York. Equipped with home automation technology that fosters independence for individuals living in the residence, the newest Greystone home opened its doors in June 2019.

The Amenia home currently provides residential support for six individuals with developmental disabilities. Installed devices in the residence communicate with HomeSeer Hub, a smart home controller powered with home automation software, to improve accessibility, safety and energy efficiency in the home. With the addition of technology such as motion sensor light switches in common areas, iPads and Amazon Echo Dots in all bedrooms, individuals have the opportunity to control home features by voice commands and/or movements. The iPads are equipped with tools such as personalized schedules, music playlists, reminders and step-by-step instructions for daily tasks.

“We are thrilled to introduce Greystone’s first SMART residence, which incorporates home automation technology to enhance independence and safety for individuals supported by Greystone,” said Skip Pryce, CEO of Greystone Programs. “We are continuously seeking new ways to empower individuals to live as independently as possible and we are proud to offer personalized, accessible technology to aid in this process.”

Greystone plans to implement similar cutting-edge technology in other residences, and currently operates 15 homes and several apartments for adolescents and adults with disabilities in Dutchess, Orange and Ulster counties. Considered Individualized Residential Alternatives (IRAs), these homes provide supportive environments where individuals strive for self-sufficiency and participate in a variety of community activities. At each residence, round-the- clock guidance is provided to support individuals with personalized care.
