GNYCUC Hosts 2019 Chairman’s Reception Honoring Leaders In New York City’s Built Environment

The Vessel, The Shed NYC and TWA Hotel Receive Major Awards

The Greater New York Construction User Council (GNYCUC) is pleased to announce that the 2019 Chairman’s Reception was held on Thursday, July 11 at The Underground in New York City. The development, construction and design communities gathered to recognize the most unique and innovative construction and development projects of 2019, as well as the individuals that facilitate such projects.

The program was led by GNYCUC Chairman John H. Pierce of the Rockefeller Group. More than 200 owners and developers attended the event, along with leading architects, engineers and construction professionals.

“The Chairman’s Reception provides a high-visibility platform to recognize some of the truly outstanding projects and people that make the New York City area so vibrant for building,” said Pierce.“GNYCUC’s goal is to ensure that private and public owners, developers, builders and designers continue to drive bold and innovative construction projects that redefine the built environment of this city.”

Many of New York City’s leading real estate, design and construction firms were recognized for their contributions for the highly anticipated real estate projects of the past year, including Kohn Pedersen Fox, Thornton Tomasseti, Sciame, Vornado Realty Trust, DeSimone Consulting Engineers, Diller Scofidio + RenfroMCR Development, Related Companies, Turner Construction, AECOM Tishman, Lendlease, The Durst Organization, Jaros Baum &Bolles, JRM Construction Management, Hunter Roberts Construction Group, Gensler and SLCE Architects.

The 2019 Individuals of the Year were:

  • Individual of the Year for Leadership in Construction: Howard L. Rowland, President,E.W. Howell
  • Individual of the Year for Leadership in Design: Jill N. Lerner, Principal, KPK


As President of E.W. Howell, Rowland directs one of the region’s leading education, retail, cultural, government and healthcare builders. Howard joined E.W. Howell in 1982 and has been president of the firm since 1997. Under his direction, the firm has become a leader in the public and private sector in the New York Metropolitan area.

With more than 35 years of design and management experience, Lerner is currently a Principal at KPF has led the design of numerous award-winning academic and institutional research facilities projects throughout the U.S.She was President of the AIA NY Chapter in 2013, is currently a Board Member of the Urban Green and is on the External Advisory Board of the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future. She was the only architect on the Cornell University Board of Trustees, is past Chair of the University’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning Alumni Advisory Council and is an active member of the President’s Council of Cornell Women.
