Swig Equities President Kent M. Swig has announced that the company will be the corporate sponsor of this year’s Jane’s Walk NYC, the annual event that takes place the first week of May throughout New York City. The event celebrates the life of the iconic New Yorker, Jane Jacobs. The weekend dates are May 3-5, 2019.

“We are honored to support this wonderful event that brings together thousands of New Yorkers and visitors to be inspired by the treasures of the New York City urban environment that were so important to the life and work of Jane Jacobs,” said Kent M. Swig, President of Swig Equities.

The annual event is held the first weekend in May and hundreds of volunteers lead walking tours and conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. The talks include local history and “encourage people to share stories about their neighborhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities and connect with visitors and neighbors alike,” according to the Municipal Art Society which organized the weekend.

Jane Jacobs – was an American-Canadian journalist, author, and activist who influenced urban studies, sociology, and economics. Her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961) argued that urban renewal did not respect the needs of city-dwellers. It also introduced the sociological concepts "eyes on the street" and "social capital.”

The Municipal Art Society was founded in 1893, a non-profit membership organization that protects New York’s legacy spaces, encourages thoughtful planning and urban design, and advocates for inclusive neighborhoods across the five boroughs. https://www.mas.org/

Kent Swig serves on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer of the Municipal Art Society.

The walks take place in all five boroughs and extend to several areas surrounding the city as well. Most of the walks are family friendly and many accessible to wheelchairs and others are also pet friendly.

The full roster of events is available on the Web site below and the walks are free and open to the public but RSVPs are encouraged. https://www.mas.org/janes-walk-nyc/
