MetaProp NYC Q4 2017 Global PropTech Confidence Index

12/27/17

MetaProp NYC, the world’s premier real estate technology nexus and early stage PropTech accelerator, announced today the results of its Q4 2017 Global PropTech Confidence Index©. The survey found that PropTech is growing quickly around the world, with an all-time high of 48% of startup CEO survey respondents headquartered outside the United States, up from 30% in Q2 2017. Overall, the respondents remain highly positive, with the Investors’ Index at 8.0, down from 8.3 in Q2, and Startup CEOs’ Index at 7.2, down from 7.3 The Q2 indexes were all-time highs in the survey.

As real estate technology grows around the world, the competition for funding should increase significantly in the coming year, as 76% of investors responding to the survey say they are expecting to see more pitches from PropTech companies in 2018, compared to 2017, up from 62% in the Q2 2017 Confidence Index.

“PropTech growth is escalating rapidly around the world, particularly in Europe, with Asia not far behind,” said MetaProp NYC Co-Founder and Managing Director Aaron Block. “As startups and legacy real estate corporations aggressively ramp up in those regions, US real estate companies are in danger of falling behind this global competition for talent, funding and innovation.

“It’s also important to note that despite the overall continued confidence, enthusiasm and growth in real estate technology, we are seeing startups having greater difficulty in obtaining early stage funding, as PropTech is following what Fred Wilson and TechCrunch recently identified as a macro-trend slump in pre-seed and seed global tech investment.”

The Global PropTech Confidence Index© is a unique barometer of the real estate tech market’s health from the perspective of the most active PropTech Investors and startup CEO/Founders around the world.

Among the Q4 2017 Global PropTech Confidence Index© Index highlights:

  • Respondents to the survey increased by 175% from Q2 2017 to Q4 2017.

  • 29% of PropTech CEOs expect that raising venture capital will be easier in 2018, compared to 2017, a decrease from 41% in Q2 2017.

The survey was designed in collaboration with the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), based on industry leading standards for sentiment analysis, based on a purposive sample of active investors and startups in real estate technology. The Index is based on responses to four sentiment questions about future market expectations and has a range of zero to 10. An Index above five indicates that respondents are confident in the market; more responded positive than negative to the survey questions. An Index below five indicates that respondents are not confident in the market; more responded negative than positive to the survey questions. An Index of five indicates that the positive and negative responses were equal.
