DXA Studio To Host Open House New York Tour Of Historic One Hundred Barclay On June 18th

6/12/19

DXA studio, a New York City based architecture and design firm known for a diverse range of projects primarily in Manhattan and Brooklyn, will host a tour of landmark Art-Deco tower One Hundred Barclay in Tribeca on June 18th at 6:30 p.m. DXA studio served as Landmarks/Design Architect for this inimitable property and was responsible for the design of all alterations and restoration work to the exterior envelope and historic lobby of the building, designed by acclaimed 20th century architect Ralph Walker. Ismael Leyva Architects were the Executive Architects and GRADE handled the new interiors for the historic development.

One Hundred Barclay was originally conceived as the headquarters for the New York Telephone Company in 1927 and has been heralded as one of the most significant structures in skyscraper design by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Co-developers CIM Group and Magnum Real Estate Group converted the top 22 floors into 156 sprawling loft-like residences with high ceilings, custom details, and the highest standards of construction. The landmarked Art Deco elevator lobby features cast bronze elevator surrounds, cast-pewter doors with flower motifs, carved marble, and limestone walls. DXA studio introduced architectural elements based on the underlying geometries of Ralph Walker’s design, including ornate grape vines, to showcase the evolution of telecommunication technologies.

“We were excited to take on the challenge of spearheading the restoration of this historic Art Deco office building which included the addition of its new residential spaces. As the telecommunications industry evolves, the equipment necessary to operate it has become smaller, more compact and efficient. It’s been exciting to help prepare One Hundred Barclay for its next life through our collaborations with the development team, Verizon and the Landmarks Preservation Commission," said DXA Studio Partner Wayne Norbeck.

Residences begin at 170 feet above street level, and rise from there, featuring ample light and views from the Hudson River to the Midtown city skyline. One Hundred Barclay offers an unprecedented amenity program. Over 40,000 square feet of carefully considered amenity spaces afford the most comprehensive offering in Tribeca, and a truly rare offering for any New York building. Services and amenities include: 24-hour doorman and concierge, fitness center designed by The Wright Fit, an 82-foot heated lap pool with adjacent children's pool, and spa and treatment rooms. At the club level on the 18th floor, the program expands to include entertaining spaces: a billiards room, a club lounge with bar and dining room, four uniquely programmed outdoor terraces, a children's play room, a teen lounge, a media lounge, a wine tasting room, and music practice rooms.

Open House New York (OHNY) is a non-profit organization that for over a decade has hosted a weekend-long event in October offering the public access to hundreds of New York’s architectural icons. Throughout the year the organization schedules tours of noteworthy and historic buildings that may have undergone transformation into 21st century uses, as is the case with One Hundred Barclay.

“DXA has had the great fortune of being involved in renovating and restoring some of the great buildings in the city. From this Ralph Walker gem to the Willem deKooning studio on Broadway, to the Upper West Side church on West 81st Street. It has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of our practice thinking about how contemporary uses and cultural considerations coexist with those of the past, and how we can simultaneously celebrate this history and make the building work for today. We are really excited to share the story of One Hundred Barclay at the OHNY tour,” said Jordan Rogove, DXA studio partner.
