Fortune Names Northwell Health a Best Workplace for Diversity

12/13/17

In recognition of its commitment to diversity and inclusion, Northwell Health was selected to Fortune's annual Great Workplaces for Diversity list, ranking 55th out of 100 organizations. The list includes some of the most recognizable global brands across a number of industries such as hospitality, information technology and financial services. Northwell was the only health care organization in New York to make the Fortune list – and one of only 11 in the entire country.

"Northwell Health's strongest asset has always been its diverse workforce," said Joseph Moscola, PA, Northwell senior vice president and chief people officer. "Embracing and promoting diversity are hallmarks of our organization, and we take great strides in creating an environment of inclusion."

To determine the list, Fortune assessed data received from Great Places to Work – a global authority in evaluating workplace cultures via its Trust Index© Employee Survey. Qualifying organizations were required to have Great Places to Work certification, at least 50 employees and survey results with at least a 95 percent confidence level, including a five percent margin of error or better.

Approximately 50 percent of Northwell's more than 63,000 employees represent diverse communities and cultures. Additionally, 72 percent of the health system's workforce is female. The health system achieved Great Places to Work certification after garnering responses from 700 employees on the anonymous survey, 83 percent of whom identified Northwell as a great workplace.

"Receiving this recognition validates Northwell's commitment to diversity and inclusion and the importance of the collaborative culture we foster at Northwell," said Jennifer Mieres, MD, senior vice president and chief diversity officer of Northwell Health. "Our strategic focus on diversity, inclusion and health equity fosters an environment that strengthens the bond between employees and ultimately benefits our patients by providing better health outcomes."

Northwell has dedicated its mission to ensuring a focus on diversity, inclusion and health equity, and ranks in the top 5 on DiversityInc's Top 12 Hospitals and Health Systems for five consecutive years. The health system's commitment includes business employee resource groups (including promoting and building partnership with diverse cultural communities, supporting LGBTQ health care and education, improving environmental and sustainable impact as well as being a military friendly organization), cross-cultural mentoring and education programs, diversity councils, supplier diversity and community outreach.

The Best Places to Work certification qualifies Northwell for several workplace-quality lists, including the Fortune 100 Best Places to Work and other credentialed lists for millennials, women, and other industry-specific lists.
