Merck To Lay Off 58 Employees In Charlotte

Merck Sharpe & Dohme Corp., a subsidiary of Merck & Co., will close one of its Charlotte facilities, resulting in 58 lost jobs, according to a filing with the Department of Commerce.

The pharmacy company will permanently close its Charlotte Service Center, located at 8050 Microsoft Way, starting Feb. 23.

The Charlotte Service Center is occupied by groups of Merck’s global controllers and human resources units. The global controllers unit and its 50 employees will be completely discontinued.

Eight human resources employees will lose their jobs, with the remaining employees relocated to the company’s other Charlotte facility.

The company will begin laying off employees Feb. 23 and will complete all layoffs by the end of May 2018.

Teri J. Lee, vice president of state government affairs policy for Merck, gave no explanation for the facility closing in the filing with the Department of Commerce.

Merck’s corporate headquarters are located in Kenilworth, New Jersey. The company employees about 69,500 worldwide. Merck’s revenue for 2016 was $39.8 billion.

The notice was filed pursuant to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which must be filed 60 days in advance of a plant closing that affects more than 50 employees in a 30-day period or a mass layoff of at least 500 employees or between 50 to 499 employees if they make up at least one-third of the employer’s workforce.
