Shifting Business Mixes and Mergers and Acquisitions Remake Ranks of Top Global Reinsurers

9/4/17

OLDWICK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In this A.M.BestTV episode, Scott Mangan, senior financial analyst, A.M. Best, reviews a key part of the new Best’s Special Report on the global reinsurance segment, titled, “Down But Not Out,” which involves an annual ranking of the world’s top 50 global reinsurance groups. Mangan discussed some of the key trends in this year’s ranking.

“The big change was Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd (Swiss Re), for the first time since 2009, according to our count based on gross premiums written, is the largest reinsurer in the world,” said Mangan.

Swiss Re bumped ahead of Munich Reinsurance Company (Munich) to claim the top spot in the ranking. Mangan highlighted what he considers the most important takeaway concerning these two companies.

“If you look at Munich and Swiss Re, between the two of them they make up 30% of the gross written premiums in the top 50. It is a very top heavy ranking, and ultimately, they can switch back and forth. Collectively, they are the largest reinsurance providers of capacity in the market.”

Additionally, Mangan believes that mergers and acquisitions do play a significant role in where companies end up in the ranking.

A copy of the ranking is available in the September issue of Best’s Review, along with the article titled, “Top 50 Global Reinsurance Groups,” please visit, http://www.ambest.com/review/default.aspx.
