William M. Ricci, MD
Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) today announced the appointment of William M. Ricci, M.D., as the new chief of the Combined HSS/NYP (NewYork-Presbyterian) Orthopedic Trauma Service, effective September 2017.
"Orthopaedic trauma is the core of orthopaedic surgery," said Todd J. Albert, M.D., surgeon-in-chief and medical director at HSS. "Dr. Ricci is a skilled surgeon whose depth and breadth of leadership experience will only enhance the hospital's commitment to delivering quality patient care."
Dr. Ricci succeeds David L. Helfet, MD as the chief of the Orthopedic Trauma Service (OTS). Dr. Helfet came to HSS 26 years ago to develop an Orthopedic Trauma Program. It has grown substantially and is now world renowned for surgical expertise, research and education. He will continue his surgical practice and to be an integral part of HSS and will collaborate with Dr. Ricci moving forward.
Dr. Ricci is internationally known and well-respected for his expertise in treating complex fractures and their complications. "The OTS is looking forward to the next chapter and wishes Dr. Ricci all the best for his success," said Dr Helfet.
Prior to joining HSS, Dr. Ricci served as chief and fellowship director of the Orthopedic Trauma Service, and vice-chair of Orthopaedics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at Duke University before completing his residency at HSS and trauma fellowship in Tampa.
His clinical focus includes fractures of the arms, legs, pelvis and acetabulum (hip), and managing nonunions (improperly healed fractures). In this area, Dr. Ricci has presented his research nationally and internationally; published over 125 peer-reviewed articles; more than 25 book chapters; multiple surgical technique videos; and has edited multiple textbooks including the internationally renowned Rockwood and Green's textbook on fracture treatment.
Dr. Ricci is currently president of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, has served on the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Association, was an American-British-Canadian (ABC) travelling fellow, and has been voted by his peers as a top orthopaedic trauma surgeon in North America.
