CookUnity Announces $1.0 Million Funding

12/22/16

CookUnity, the New York-based startup enabling users to easily order healthy food through its mobile app and online, today announced a $1.0 Million funding round led by tech entrepreneurs Matias de Tezanos and Rohit DSouza. Also participating are angel investors Jose Vargas co-founder of PeopleFund, Alberto Gross CEO of cladirect.com, Howard Yeh CEO of Healthcare.com, Stella Maris Partners and Invariantes Fund.

CookUnity's platform empowers independent chefs to sell their specialties online, a healthier alternative to compete with restaurant platforms like Grubhub, Seamless or UberEats. By using underutilized kitchen space, CookUnity created a more efficient and more scalable decentralized food model. CookUnity is building a service for people to eat healthier food, prepared by real people vs. the current delivery scenario, dominated by restaurants or big delivery chains offering food high in calories and low in nutrients.

Over 60 chefs are part of CookUnity's Chefs Community. They rotate every week depending on their own schedules. Each Chef cooks his own recipes with farm fresh ingredients and packed chilled, with instructions to be heated.

Currently servicing the Manhattan market, CookUnity plans to acquire new customers in Manhattan and expand into Brooklyn and Queens. In a time when the major food startups are struggling with unit economics, CookUnity will continue to focus on margins and target to get to breakeven and 30% gross margin with this round.

Customers can log on to CookUnity from the web, via an iOS App, and soon, Android, in order to choose between 15 to 20 daily meals and easily place an order using their credit card. Customers can choose from a wide variety of cuisines and dietary restrictions. CookUnity is open for dinner seven nights a week and for lunch from Monday to Friday.

"Our commitment is to offer our customers in New York a tempting and healthy variety of locally sourced meals, at affordable prices and fast delivery," said Mateo Felix Marietti, founder and CEO of CookUnity. " We are excited about this financing round which will help expand our product offering and reach more customers in the New York area."

CookUnity was founded in spring 2015, by CEO Mateo Felix Marietti and Head Chef Lucia Cisilotto. Marietti is an Argentinean serial entrepreneur in food delivery, co-founder of Sushi PoP, the biggest food delivery company in Argentina, with more than 4 million deliveries to date.
