MightyTV Raises $2M Seed from Canaan Partners

8/14/16

MightyTV, the first video discovery app that uses machine learning to provide users with hyper-personalized lists of great shows and movies, announced today that Michael Barrett is joining the company’s board.

The company also disclosed that it has secured another $2M in additional seed capital from Canaan Partners and Spark Capital. The new capital will be used to further enhance the video discovery process, and product development to support the company’s rapid growth. The company is also adding two new streaming services HBO Now, and Crackle, to complement its impressive catalog of that already encompasses Amazon, Netflix, Showtime, Hulu, Cinemax, and HBO Go.

Since launch in April this year, MightyTV’s machine learning platform has taken direct aim at the trouble of finding something good among the abundance of video content with a new way to discover quality videos based on personal tastes and what you have in common with friends. More than 6 million choices have been logged by users so far with more than one-third of the catalog of 30,000 titles being watchlisted by users.

To harness all of this rich data and give users more recommendations on what’s worth watching and trending, MightyTV is also announcing the launch of a new weekly video report called The Mighty List. Driven in part by MightyTV’s user data along with the editorial team, The Mighty List shows you which streaming shows and movies you won’t want to miss. Catch up on surprising crazes, and the best of what’s trending and free in weekly video roundups that can be found on the company’s website, Facebook, and Twitter pages.

“MightyTV’s AI-driven approach to video discovery isn’t just a huge win for TV and movie lovers, it’s big news for the rapidly expanding entertainment industry as well,” said Barrett. “Video publishers want to put the right media in front of receptive audiences but millions of viewers are frustrated with the time it takes to sort through hundreds of pieces of content to find what they want. MightyTV provides a much needed solution to this growing problem through an elegant interface that matches your interests and what you have in common with friends, so you always have access to new content tailored to your tastes and you never have to waste time again searching for great videos.”

Prior to founding his own investment company, Barrett was the former CEO of Millennial Media, which sold to AOL in 2015 for $238M. He also held the position of Chief Revenue Officer at Yahoo!. Michael was also the CEO of AdMeld, an advertising optimization platform acquired by Google for $400M in 2011, which he co-founded along with Mighty.TV CEO Brian Adams.
Barrett’s appointment comes at an exciting time for MightyTV as the company also launches its highly anticipated duel email and Facebook profile registration. The new feature makes it even more convenient for users to sign up and use group mashup, a social feature that lets friends find the perfect things to watch together, without signing in through Facebook.

“Having worked with Michael at AdMeld, and over the last 10 years, I know firsthand that he’ll be a great compliment to our board,” said CEO Brian Adams. “Combined with the new seed round from existing investors, I trust that Michael’s instincts will help us accelerate our mission to help put an end to your search for what to watch next. Video discovery is such a vast problem to solve, but we’re encouraged by the level of engagement we’ve seen so far and the data that supports our early vision. I believe we’re onto something truly big.”

Launched in April 2016, MightyTV was founded by a team of veteran technologists led by Brian Adams, former co-founder and CTO of AdMeld. The app solves the ever-growing problem of discovery for millions of cord cutters, couples, and millennials who are frustrated with wasting 20 minutes each night flipping through channels on their remote and giving up.
