MetLife (NYSE:MET) provides insurance and other financial services to individuals and institutions. Tuesday, February 14, 2012, the company will report its fourth quarter earnings.

Expectations: Analysts are expecting the company to report earnings of $1.24 per share, up 8.8% from a year ago, when it reported earnings of $1.14 per share. The consensus estimate remains unchanged over the past month, but it has decreased from three months ago when it was $1.27. Analysts are expecting earnings of $4.91 per share for the fiscal year. The company's revenue is expected to beat the year-earlier total of $12.84 billion by 30.9% to finish at $16.81 billion for the quarter. Projected revenue for the fiscal year is $66.51 billion.

Performance: Revenue has increased for four consecutive quarters. Revenue rose 64.4% to $20.46 billion in the third quarter. Looking back further, revenue increased 20.4% year-over-year in the second quarter, 20.6% in the first quarter, and 4% in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. The company's earnings have been rising for the last eight quarters, and for the last four, net income has increased year-over-year by an average of more than threefold. The company saw the biggest boost in the most recent quarter, in which it saw a 1033.5% growth. The stock price has risen from $33.07 on November 11, 2011 to $37.69 over the past quarter. MetLife's best recent streak was when its price gained $3.09 per share between December 20, 2011 and January 9, 2012.

Ratings: Analysts are supportive of the stock, with 78.9% rating it a buy. In comparison, its nearest 10 competitors only average 57.7% buys. Analysts' buy ratings have increased slightly over the last three months.
