Roger Coleman of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney was named New York's top financial advisor in 2012 by Barron's. He earned the accolade for the second straight year.
Also for the second year in a row, Coleman was followed by Brian Pfeifler of Morgan Stanley PWM and Richard Saperstein of HighTower.
Barron's based its rankings on data from more than 4,000 advisors, factoring in components such as assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, regulatory record, quality of practice, and philanthropic work.
Barron's said that investment performance "isn't an explicit component because not all advisors have audited results and because performance figures often are influenced more by clients' risk tolerance than by an advisor's investment-picking abilities."
About Coleman, Barron's said: As one of 12 kids, Coleman says he "understood the value of the dollar because he earned it." He worked construction jobs to get through college and even put in a stint at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It's one reason he makes sure all clients - from a selfmade millionaire to pro-bono clients from the 9/11 nonprofit Tuesday's Children - are armed with fully developed financial, trust and estate planning. He says his most complex cases involve balancing the desires of several generations. "We really layer them with facts. You can't argue with the facts," Coleman says.
Rounding out the top 10 for New York were Shelley Bergman, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney; Paul Tramontano, Constellation Wealth Advisors; Lyon Polk, Morgan Stanley PWM; Sanjan Dhody, Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown; Kevin Peters, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney; Gus Roessler, Morgan Stanley PWM; and Martin Halbfinger,UBS Financial Services.
