Tim Bradshaw of the Financial Times reported that Blackstone Group has been purchasing web domain names such as blackstonesucks.com and schwarzmansucks.com, that take potshots at the giant investor. This kind of "defensive registration" is common for large companies, according to MarkMonitor, a domain protection company that did not confirm or deny Blackstone's initiative. But CEO Stephen Schwartzman did recently express concern about "politically motivated attacks on private equity if Mitt Romney, founder of Bain Capital, becomes the Republican nominee for president."
With growing hostility toward the finance industry and the high profile of financial issues in the current presidential campaign, companies have become more alert to " domain-name hijacking."
Even if hostile domain names are rubbed out, Twitter, Facebook and other social networks offer opportunities for brand-bashers. Bradshaw notes that a "blackstonesucks" account was set up on Twitter when his story was first published.
