Hatchery Runs Gauntlet in Miami - cbl

NEW YORK - Are you serious, Miami? That's what The Hatchery wants to know as it makes its maiden voyage down from the snows of New York to the sands of South Beach.
Five startups are invited to perfect their pitches before a panel of judges next week in The Are You Serious? event, the first one hatched beyond the Big Apple and representing the initial phase of expansion for its sponsor.
Founded in 2007, The Hatchery was created to fill what it saw as a void between entrepreneurs, investors, and the tech community in New York.
Co-founder David Blumenstein, who'll be one of the judges on next Thursday's panel, said that the venture collaboration chose South Florida to expand to because the people they knew there were deeply entrenched the entrepreneur community.
Hence, The Hatchery is to become a permanent fixture in Miami as it sets out to conduct ongoing events around town to drum up energy around startups and, Blumenstein added, ideally to create a funnel between Miami entrepreneurs and New York investors.
Besides the Are You Serious? event, which is designed to help CEOs and spokespeople sharpen their pitches as they get feedback from experts, investors, and even audience members, The Hatchery operates The Gauntlet in its New York headquarters.
For that event, three emerging companies are chosen to participate. Each one takes the stage to pitch for seven minutes and then responds to 15 minutes of interrogation from a panel of specialists and investors and an audience of private equity, venture capital, early stage, Fortune 500, and angel investors, along with corporate executives, analysts and members of the press.
Blumenthal said that one company ended up getting more than $10 million in funding after acing the event.
For now The Gauntlet remains in New York, but The Hatchery is taking a permanent roost in Miami and hoping that its entrepreneurs and startups are saying that they are, indeed, serious.
The event is to be held February 16 at 6PM in the Miami Dade College Auditorium.
